Acwa- network - The Association of Collaboration in Worldwide Academia (ACWA) in collaboration with Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST) successfully hosted the Global Virtual Roundtable 2026 on Thursday, August 27, 2026, bringing together academics, researchers, and higher education representatives from different countries to discuss the evolving role of universities in preparing graduates for the future of work.
Carrying the theme “Are Universities Responsible for Jobs—or Just Education?”, the international forum explored a critical question facing higher education today: whether universities should only focus on delivering academic knowledge or also take responsibility for transforming education into meaningful career opportunities.
The virtual roundtable gathered participants from Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, and the United States, creating a global platform for exchanging perspectives on education, employability, innovation, and university-industry collaboration.
Throughout the discussion, participants shared a common understanding that universities cannot guarantee employment for every graduate, but they have an important responsibility to develop adaptable, skilled, and employable graduates. The discussion emphasized that higher education institutions should provide students with a balance between theoretical foundations and practical experiences to better prepare them for professional environments.
One of the key topics highlighted during the session was the importance of strengthening collaboration between universities and industries. Participants discussed various approaches, including internship programs, curriculum co-development, industry partnerships, and the involvement of practitioners in academic learning. These efforts were considered essential to ensure that university education remains relevant to the changing needs of society and the workforce.
Representatives from different countries also shared their regional experiences in addressing higher education challenges. Discussions highlighted the importance of career development services, entrepreneurship programs, interdisciplinary learning, and continuous curriculum improvement. Participants emphasized that universities should not only prepare students to become job seekers but also encourage them to become innovators, entrepreneurs, and future contributors to society.
The roundtable also addressed the balance between employability and the broader purpose of education. While universities are expected to respond to workforce demands, participants agreed that higher education should continue to strengthen critical thinking, resilience, creativity, and lifelong learning as essential qualities for future generations.
Through the Global Virtual Roundtable 2026, ACWA and WUST reaffirmed their commitment to fostering international academic collaboration and creating meaningful spaces for global knowledge exchange. The event served as a platform for academics and institutions worldwide to connect, share insights, and explore innovative approaches for shaping the future of higher education.
